The custom bench

Custom dies, cut from your drawing

Upload a file, choose a material, and see the price before you commit.

How it works

  1. 01

Draw the part at its real size

One closed outline for the part, and a closed outline for every hole. Millimetres if you can. The price is driven by the length of the lines, so an open stroke or a leftover guide line is money you should not be paying.

  2. 02

Save or export it as SVG or DXF

Those are the two formats we can measure today. PDF, AI and scans are not open yet — export from your drawing app, or trace the scan back to paths.

  3. 03

    Drop the file in

Up to 10 MB. Your browser reads the drawing and shows the price straight away; the server then re-reads the same file and re-quotes it from scratch.

  4. 04

    Check the measured size

If the width and height we report are not the size you drew, the file's units are wrong — that is the single most common problem. Set them by hand and the figure updates.

  5. 05

    Choose material, thickness and quantity

The estimate updates as you change anything. Thickness options follow the material — steel rule foil only goes to 2 mm, so it is not offered at 10 mm.

  6. 06

    Add it to the cart

Nothing is cut yet. We make a digital proof and send it to you; the cut only starts once you have looked at it and said yes.

PVC foam and POM / Delrin are not on this list. Lasering PVC releases hydrogen chloride, which becomes hydrochloric acid inside the machine and attacks the optics; POM releases formaldehyde. No setting makes either of them safe, so neither is cut here.

Two worked examples

Both drawings are real files, and every figure below was measured from them. Download either one and drop it into the box above to see the same numbers.

A circle 90 mm across with a 6 mm hole in the centre
Two closed circles. The big one is the outline, the small one is a hole.

A drink coaster, 90 mm across

An outline and a single 6 mm hole. Because the second circle sits inside the first, we count it as a hole rather than as another part.

  • 301.6 mm of cut 282.7 mm of outline + 18.8 mm of hole
  • 90 × 90 mm footprint taken from the drawing, not from you
  • 1 hole counted by what sits inside what

25 coasters, veg-tan leather 3 mm $42.53 $1.70 each
25 coasters, clear acrylic 3 mm $32.30 $1.29 each
100 coasters, clear acrylic 3 mm $102.68 $1.03 each

A 40 by 120 mm bookmark outline with six 3 mm stitch holes
One rounded outline, six circles for stitching.

A leather bookmark, 40 × 120 mm

Six 3 mm circles down the centre give you somewhere to stitch. Tick Stitch holes in the Finishing box and they are priced individually.

  • 376.5 mm of cut 320 mm of outline + 56.5 mm of holes
  • 40 × 120 mm footprint
  • 6 holes each one inside the outline

25 bookmarks, veg-tan leather 3 mm $36.00 $1.44 each
same, with stitch holes ticked $38.34 $1.53 each
25 bookmarks, veg-tan leather 6 mm $51.12 $2.04 each

Same footprint, different price

These three parts are all 90 mm across and all fit the same square of material. They do not cost the same, because you are not buying material — you are buying the distance the laser has to travel.

A circle, a square and a 24-tooth disc, each 90 mm across, labelled 282.7 mm, 360.0 mm and 390.0 mm of cut
All three cut at 3 mm MDF, 25 off, first order.
  • 282.7 mm circle 1.00 × · $19.56
  • 360.0 mm square 1.27 × · $21.67
  • 390.0 mm 24-tooth disc 1.38 × · $22.49

A square is 27% more cut than a circle of the same width, and a toothed edge is 38% more. That is the whole reason the quote moves when you change the shape and the size does not.

What counts as a cut line

On the left a closed rectangle with a closed circle inside it; on the right an open two-segment stroke with loose ends

What we can cut

  • Closed outlines — a shape that goes all the way round.
  • Closed holes inside the outline, at any size.
  • Curves; we flatten them into fine segments to measure them, which is why a circle may read a fraction of a millimetre short of the exact circumference.
  • Groups and transforms, in SVG or DXF.

What costs you money or stops the file

  • Open strokes — one line is a line, not a shape, and there is nothing to cut out.
  • Stray construction lines and duplicated outlines left in the file: they are measured and charged for like anything else.
  • Text left as text. Convert it to outlines, or it will not be read.
  • A scanned image saved as SVG. If there are no vector paths inside, there is nothing to measure and we will say so rather than guess.

What files we take

Today the bench reads SVG and DXF, up to 10 MB, and measures them automatically. Those are the two formats the measuring engine genuinely understands, so they are the two we offer.

PDF, AI and scanned images are not open yet. We would rather say that than accept a file we cannot measure and send you a price built on a guess. If you only have your drawing as a PDF or a photo, send it over — we read those by hand and quote you from the real outline. More formats are being added.
